Quick answer
Sulforaphane is one of the most studied dietary compounds in cell and animal models, and one of the least studied in large human trials. Most of what circulates about it rests on laboratory work. The mechanism most consistently reported is activation of the Nrf2 pathway, which regulates a set of the body’s own antioxidant and detoxification enzymes.
Almost every benefit attributed to sulforaphane traces back to one mechanism: it activates Nrf2, a transcription factor that switches on a group of protective enzymes. That mechanism is well established in the laboratory. What follows from it in a living person, at doses reachable through food or supplements, is a much more open question.
